Mozart nowadays: Where in Salzburg would you meet him?
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: man-about-town – then and now? What would our Wolferl be like here and now? Where in Salzburg would he spend his time and what would he look like? We are making a daring attempt to bring Salzburg's most famous son into the present.
Historians all agree: Mozart was a quirky character filled with cheek, curiosity and a zest for action. He had a sense of aesthetics and an was partial to a lavish lifestyle, games, opulent food and the "occasional" drink. We sought out places where Mozart would spend his valuable free time in Salzburg – and we got lucky. You would most probably meet Mozart at the following establishments:
The Barber
Mozart took great pride in his appearance. He was considered vain and would never leave his house any less than impeccably styled. This is why he would obviously regularly visit a barber shop. The Barber in Markus-Sittikus-Strasse number 3 has the motto "epic stuff is done here" and was designed with great attention to detail. Chesterfield sofas, old-school barber chairs, a bar with the best whisky and, of course, perfectly trimmed beards and hairstyles is bliss for the man-about-town. Casual fashion is also on sale – Mozart would certainly opt for one of the chic leather jackets today.
Naked Trust Tattoo
In order to live up to his reputation as a rebel, Mozart would probably also sport a couple of tattoos and perhaps some piercings. The Naked Trust Tattoo crew in Müllner Haupstrasse number 20 has experts of both: the founder of Salzburg's oldest and first tattoo and piercing studio has won numerous awards. It is therefore not surprising that people form all over the world come for this top-quality service. With what kind of motifs do you think Mozart would adorn his skin? – We're thinking along the lines of a multi-coloured arm full of musical notes and staves.
Café Tomaselli
Even during his lifetime, Wolfgang Amadeus loved to go to the classic coffee house in Salzburg – and we are sure that one of the charming corners in Café Tomaselli would still serve as his retreat today. Mozart would allegedly always sip his almond milk at the Tomaselli on Alter Markt 9 – quite trendy even back then. It's hard to believe that Café Tomaselli is the oldest café in Austria. Mozart would certainly appreciate the exceptional atmosphere among crystal chandeliers, ornate stucco ceilings, walnut wood panelling and the cake ladies who present guests with sweet delicacies on a silver platter.
Restaurant Stieglkeller
Mozart had a pronounced weakness for savoury dishes such as veal cutlets or liver dumplings with sauerkraut accompanied by aromatic beer. Nowadays he would certainly take a convivial group to the Stieglkeller restaurant at Festungsgasse number 10 and, with a wonderful view over the Old Town, enjoy dishes such as "Styrian carpaccio with pumpkin-seed-oil mayonnaise" or " dumplings stuffed with pork crackling or bacon served with sauerkraut". Also, Mozart could treat himself to a "ProBIER-Brettl" [taste exBEERience] – for this, a Stiegl beer sommelier puts together a selection of different beers to sample – perfect for Wolferl.
Bricks Music Bar
When it came to leisure time, Mozart would always keep his eye on the ball – especially in a game of skittles or pool. Since he was always quite the rock star among his contemporaries, he would probably pay the odd visit to the Bricks Music Bar in Lederergasse number 8, where there's rock music and cool beer as well as a pool table. Well, would you take on Mozart in a game of pool? We're sure our man-about-town would be knocking back the drinks and buying as many rounds until the wee hours of the night. His way home would be easy, as the Bricks Music Bar is right around the corner from Mozart's Residence on the right-hand side of the Old Town.
