Leisurely bike ride through Salzburg

The sun is shining and you feel like doing some sport? – then get on your bike and off you go on tempting excursions in and around the town of Salzburg – here are some tips to make your experience an enjoyable one.

With its extensive network of cycle paths (160 km), the town of Salzburg has received several awards for being Austria's most bicycle-friendly municipality. Particularly cycle paths along the Salzach river provide cyclists with ease access to the Old Town and the surroundings alike. Whether you're on an e-bike, racing bike, mountain bike or gravel bike, there is an abundance of delightful and tasty things to discover in and around the town of Salzburg – you will certainly not run out of ideas for cycling tours in the coming weeks.

Bicycle-friendly city of Salzburg

Many of the highlights and Restaurants in Salzburg are easily reachable by bike. Whether it's the Café am Kai after a leisurely bike ride along the Salzach river, the Boutique Gasthof Überfuhr in Aigen, the Müllner Bräu, the Weiserhof behind the train station, the Fuxn or Stiegl-Brauwelt for a cool refreshing drink or a hearty snack, it's always enjoyable. This time we'd like to take you on a special bike tour starting in the town of Salzburg: our Flachgau Radl-Roas [bike tour of the Flachgau region] to the surrounding villages of Hallwang and Eugendorf. We recommend that our guests either bring their own bikes (which works well on the train) or rent bikes for the day from their hotels. Now you can join us on our bike tour.

Flachgau Radl-Roas bike tour

We start our approximately 26-km-long bike tour directly at the Marko-Feingold-Steg (footbridge) next to the Hotel Sacher and head north along the Salzach river into the Flachgau region. From the path along the Salzach, we turn right along the Alterbach river, which takes us directly to the Ischler Trasse. The former railway used to run from Salzburg to Bad Ischl, and has now become a popular cycling and walking route. The path is paved throughout and leads us through a varied landscape via Hallwang to Eugendorf in about half an hour. The slight incline is distributed evenly over the entire route, so there's no need to be a cycling pro – the experience is what matters. Our motivation is the enjoyable destination.

Welcome to the Holznerwirt

The Holznerwirt is a popular meeting point for foodies, people who enjoy sitting in beer convivial beer gardens or cyclists who wish to replenish their energy reserves. The Holznerwirt stands for excellent cuisine and serves classic traditional dishes as well as varied new interpretations. They pride themselves on their regional products – the beef, for instance – which largely come from their own organic farm. Their fish comes from the nearby lakes, Fuschlsee and Mondsee. Here's another tip from the editors: you must try the Holznerwirt's Tafelspitz. It's served  in a soup terrine with classic roast potatoes, chive sauce and apple horseradish – simply delicious.

The chestnut trees in the beer garden provide welcome shade on hot days. Anyone who's still in the mood for an ice-cold dessert, can get a Leimüller ice cream directly opposite – or go on to the "Eugendorf Italian", Gelateria Lombardo, for some delicious Italian gelato.

Do you know the advantage of having travelled up a metre or two in altitude on the way there? On the way home via the Ischler Trasse, it feels like you pedal once in Eugendorf and roll all the way back to the town of Salzburg.

Other bike routes

Has this convinced you to come on a bike ride? We're sure you'll enjoy it. And since this is only one of many bike routes around Salzburg, we've compiled two more approximately 20-km bike tours for you:

  • Grödig: if you're looking for a real gourmet tour, perhaps you'd enjoy the route to the famous Walter Grüll fish and seafood bistro in Grödig. The best route to take from Salzburg is the car-free Hellbrunner Allee. After the palace, you turn right into the Keltenallee. From there, on the relatively short way to Grödig, you will find the Restaurants Pflegerbrücke and Mostwastl – both have shady beer gardens.
  • Wals-Siezenheim: do you fancy a bike tour to the beach club? Simply head to Wals-Siezenheim, park your bike at Hotel Gerl and check into their Day Spa. The rout there runs conveniently via the Klessheimer Allee, past the baroque Klessheim Palace down to the Saalach river. Then you continue along the river westwards until shortly before the Hammerauer bridge, when you turn left into the centre of Wals, where you will find Hotel Gerl.
