Leonhardiritt in Grödig

The Leonhardiritt in Grödig is a festival held in honor of Saint Leonard, deeply rooted in Salzburg’s tradition.

The Leonhardiritt takes place annually on the first Sunday around November 6th in Grödig, near Salzburg, and is a significant traditional event with a history spanning centuries. Saint Leonard is venerated as the patron saint of farmers, horses, livestock, and agriculture. During the procession, participants showcase horses and carriages lavishly decorated with flowers and ribbons. The event is accompanied by music, traditional groups, an open-air mass, and the traditional “Kranzlstechen” (a ring-tilting competition).

Program:

09:00 AM: Riders gather at the festival grounds
10:00 AM: Procession from the festival grounds via St. Leonhard Street, Untersberg Street, Quellen Street, Wald Street, and Drachenloch Street, returning to the festival grounds, where the riders are welcomed with music
Brief open-air mass with a blessing of the riders and horses, followed by the march to the Kranzlstechen competition

In case of bad weather, only the blessing of the riders and horses will take place, with the mass held in the church if it rains.
