Funicular to the Fortress [FestungsBahn]
News
The FestungsBahn is not in operation due to the revision from 4 November to 8 November 2024. However, there is a footpath to the fortress (or alternatively you can take the Mönchsberg lift).
The FestungsBahn is Austria's oldest funicular railway still in operation. It has been taking visitors up the Festungsberg since 1892.
The FestungsBahn has been running to Hohensalzburg Fortress, the city's most striking landmark, in summer and winter since 1892. It runs every 10 minutes. The valley station is located in the heart of the old town (Festungsgasse 4). It takes just 54 seconds to cover a distance of 198.5 metres.
The most recent renovation of the Festungsbahn took place in 2011. Investments were made in two new carriages and technical upgrades to the electronic equipment. The new carriages are more comfortable than ever, while also boasting big observation windows that treat passengers to sensational views of beautiful downtown Salzburg.
