The route in detail
The starting-point of the town walk is the Mirabell Garden. Here fans of The Sound of Music will find many familiar motifs: the stairs leading up to the "rose hill", the Pegasus fountain, the pergola walks and the dwarf garden. We continue over the Mozartsteg [footbridge] to the Residenzplatz and Kajetanerplatz in the Old Town. Next stop: the Benedictine convent on the Nonnberg, then on to St Peter's cemetery, where the burial vaults, arcades and catacombs served as a model for the setting of the escape scenes. On the way to the Pferdeschwemme [horse pond] we pass the Felsenreitschule [the summer riding-school of the court], which can be visited as part of a guided tour. Last stop is the Mönchsberg terrace by the Museum of Modern Art, which offers an incomparable view of the town.
