City Walks: On the Trail of The Sound of Music

The Sound of Music is one of the most successful films of all time. Inspired by the story of the Trapp family and enhanced with timeless melodies, impressive landscapes and a dramatic escape, it has delighted audiences around the world for almost 60 years. Join us on the trail of The Sound of Music and visit the authentic locations in Salzburg.

The route in detail

The starting-point of the town walk is the Mirabell Garden. Here fans of The Sound of Music will find many familiar motifs: the stairs leading up to the "rose hill", the Pegasus fountain, the pergola walks and the dwarf garden. We continue over the Mozartsteg [footbridge] to the Residenzplatz and Kajetanerplatz in the Old Town. Next stop: the Benedictine convent on the Nonnberg, then on to St Peter's cemetery, where the burial vaults, arcades and catacombs served as a model for the setting of the escape scenes. On the way to the Pferdeschwemme [horse pond] we pass the Felsenreitschule [the summer riding-school of the court], which can be visited as part of a guided tour. Last stop is the Mönchsberg terrace by the Museum of Modern Art, which offers an incomparable view of the town.
