Hohenwerfen Fortress
Hohenwerfen Castle is enthroned on a 155-metre-high rocky spur above the Salzach Valley, around 40 kilometers south of Salzburg. The more than 950-year-old fortress offers an experience for the whole family with guided tours, a falconry and exciting exhibitions.
Hohenwerfen was built between 1075 and 1078 by the Archbishop Gebhard of Salzburg as a fortification. Today, the view from 623 meters above sea level offers a panorama over the Berchtesgaden Alps and has already served as a film set, for example for "Where Eagles Dare" / "Agents Die Alone".
Over the centuries, the functions of the castle changed - from stronghold to barracks to the present-day adventure world. Visitors discover in the exhibition about "The Castle Ages" & "The Uprising" - Peasant War 1525/1526, as well as in the Austrian Falconry Museum history up close.
Several times a day, eagles, falcons, and vultures take to the skies from the state-owned falconry. The flight show explains in an easily understandable way why UNESCO protects falconry as an intangible cultural heritage.
The extensive event calendar of the Hohenwerfen Adventure Castle is continuously expanded and revised. New and extensive special programs like fairy tale hikes, theater performances, cultural afternoons, as well as medieval festivities, special falconry programs, and mystical nights make Hohenwerfen Castle a family experience throughout the year.
Sports enthusiasts and nature lovers make their way up on foot. The path leads around the rock cone and is mostly in the shady forest. Those who want to reach the upper courtyard of Hohenwerfen Castle a bit more comfortably can take the passenger lift.
Hohenwerfen Fortress is open from April until beginning of November. The detailled opening hours can be found on the official website.
