Morawa Höllrigl Book Store
Located along Sigmund-Haffner-Gasse, parallel to Getreidegasse, Höllrigl is Austria's oldest bookstore and the second oldest in the German-speaking world.
The bookstore boasts a beautiful vaulted ceiling and intricate frescoes on the first floor, which can be accessed via a spiral staircase. These features give the traditional Salzburg bookstore a distinctly nostalgic atmosphere.
Höllrigl offers an impressively diverse range of books. While general literature is well-represented, the bookstore places a strong emphasis on Salzburg-themed titles. It also caters to students from the nearby universities, offering works in history, languages, and law. One room is dedicated to travel literature, while other sections cover natural sciences, gardening, music, health, art, and English books. The children's and young adult sections occupy a generous space on the ground floor, making it a great destination for families as well.
Next door, at the entrance on Universitätsplatz, there are two additional areas: First, the Höllrigl Gift Shop, where a wide range of items featuring Salzburg motifs and literary quotes are available – perfect for souvenirs or gifts. For fantasy lovers, the cellar of the Höllrigl Gift Shop is a treasure trove, offering the bookstore’s collection of adult science fiction, comics, and manga.
