Salzburg charms visitors with its city mountains, gardens, and places by the water. Hiking trails above the Old Town, spacious parks, and drinking fountains offer plenty of ways to experience the city outdoors.
City Mountains
Salzburg is nestled between its city mountains. Festungsberg and the adjoining Mönchsberg, Kapuzinerberg, and Gaisberg, as well as Untersberg to the south of Salzburg, all offer opportunities for hiking. Trails lead through forests and meadows, with panoramic views of the Old Town, the Salzach River, and the surrounding Salzburg region along the way.
Water
Water is an integral part of Salzburg. The Salzach River flows through the Old Town, and its riverbanks are a pleasant place to spend time in summer. Numerous fountains in narrow lanes and across spacious squares offer a refreshing stop along the way. The Trick Fountains at Hellbrunn also provide a memorable experience for visitors of all ages.
Green Spaces
Green spaces are an important part of Salzburg’s cityscape. The city mountains, along with beautiful gardens and parks, are just as much a part of the city as the many church towers of the Old Town. Salzburg has a long tradition of garden culture that dates back to the city’s prince-archbishops. Today, the city’s parks and public green spaces are maintained by Salzburg’s municipal gardening team.
Salzburg’s surrounding villages: nature and recreation around the city
Just outside the historic city center, the communities on the outskirts of Salzburg offer a variety of outdoor activities and green spaces. On hot days, Glasenbach Gorge in Elsbethen is a welcome place to cool off. The surrounding area offers plenty of opportunities to slow down and relax. In Anthering, visitors can also discover local products inspired by the moorland, ranging from moor beer to moor cream.
