Heckentheater [hedge theatre] in the Mirabell Garden
The Mirabell Garden in Salzburg is full of surprises, some of them slightly concealed. They include the Zwergerlgarten [gnome garden] for example, and the 18th-century hedge theatre.
The Heckentheater was created between 1704 and 1718 inspired by French designs and is today one of the oldest natural theatres north of the Alps. It consists of the audience space, an orchestra pit and a semi-circular stage surrounded with hedges. Directly connected to the stage area are the narrow passages of the hedge maze, enabling artists to appear on stage from various sides. Its historic design makes the hedge theatre a unique feature in Europe.
The unique and natural atmosphere of the hedge theatre in the Mirabell Garden with its exceptional acoustics is a popular venue for small theatre performances, traditional events and concerts.
