Schauspielhaus Salzburg
The Schauspielhaus Salzburg (formerly "Elisabethbühne") is located in the Nonntal district and is the largest independent theater in Austria.
With approximately 60,000 visitors annually and ten to fourteen productions, the Schauspielhaus has secured a fixed place in Salzburg's event calendar. The theater's clear focus is on world and premiere performances, as well as theater for young audiences.
Founded in 1958, the “Elisabethbühne” started in the cellars of the Elisabeth Church. In the 1995/96 season, the theater moved to the “Petersbrunnhof,” a former manor house of the St. Peter Abbey in Salzburg's Nonntal district. Since the 2004/05 season, the theater has been named “Schauspielhaus Salzburg.”
The classical arches of the columned foyer not only provide an atmospheric break room, but also host readings, openings, and exhibitions. Additionally, theater educational projects are initiated for young people, and there is a dedicated acting school, workshops, a costume department, and rehearsal stages in nearby Elsbethen in the south of the city.
