SZENE Salzburg
On Anton-Neumayer-Platz in the center of Salzburg's old town lies the SZENE Café, run by SZENE Salzburg, an independent cultural association. Since 2001, contemporary art and cultural performances have taken place in the modern function rooms.
After the remodeling work on this former cinema had been completed, the Republic opened its new event space in 2001. A telescopic stage can be adapted to every imaginable requirement including cabaret, readings, theater and dance, festivals and exhibitions etc., providing entertainment for up to 700 visitors.
Since the late 60s, Szene Salzburg has stood for contemporary stage performance and music. It is a festival organizer as well as the presenter and producer of contemporary dance and theater. Almost 300,000 visitors come every year to this pulsating center in the Salzburg historic district: aside from concerts, cabaret evenings, theater and dance productions, popular club nights and parties are also hosted here.
Originally, Szene served as a platform for local performers. But today, it is active as an international producer and offers residencies for Austrian as well as foreign artists. The 70s and 80s saw the creation of an international avantgarde festival that is often described as the antithesis of the actual Salzburg Festival. The Sommerszene – a festival of contemporary dance and theater – takes place annually in the months of June and July.
