Salzburg Festival Whitsun 2025 - Vespro della Beata Virigine
During the 2025 Salzburg Whitsun Festival, you will hear a selection of music spanning five centuries, featuring works that were either written in Venice, created for Venice or inspired by the city.
Vespro della Beata Vergine
Venice has been a centre of musical history for centuries, famous for composers such as Gabrieli, Monteverdi, Rossini and Verdi, and as the birthplace of the world's first opera house. Claudio Monteverdi, in particular, played a pivotal role: in 1613 he became the cathedral's choirmaster, one of the most prestigious positions in Italy. His most famous work, the 'Vespro della Beata Vergine', published in 1610, combines his operatic style with sacred music and is considered one of the most important sacred works of the 17th century.
