Hallstatt Tour
Along the shores of Lake Hallstatt, the houses are seemingly stacked one on top of another – so picturesque, in fact, that they have even made a replica of Hallstatt in China. This bus tour, however, will bring you to the inimitable original.
In the Heart of the Dachstein Region
The tour begins in Salzburg City and takes you to the heart of the Dachstein region. The route leads via towns famous for their resort lakes and spas, such as Fuschl, St. Gilgen – also known as the “Mozart Village” – and Bad Ischl. On the south-western shore of fjord-like Lake Hallstatt lies Hallstatt itself, the destination of this particular excursion.
Like a journey back to the past
Hallstatt enchants visitors with its very special charm: In this small town, time seems to have stood still. The many historically listed houses are lovingly maintained and preserved. One unique tradition of the region are the painted human skulls, which can be viewed in the charnel house. The adjacent Catholic parish church and its winged altar are also well worth seeing.
A place steeped in history
Because of its beautiful townscape, Hallstatt is often referred to as the world’s most beautiful lakeside town. Though the town also has unique cultural and historical significance: Thousands of years ago, people settled here and even mined salt. In 1997, UNESCO declared the “Hallstatt Dachstein Salzkammergut” region a World Cultural Landscape.
Hallstatt as a World Heritage Site
At the World Heritage Museum in Hallstatt, you will learn all about the 7,000-year history of Hallstatt, from Neolithic settlement to the present day. The Skywalk provides a perfect opportunity to gaze out over the town’s unique architecture: This viewing platform on the Salzberg hovers 360 meters above the rooftops. This panorama of Hallstatt, the lake and the Dachstein mountains is an absolute must-see.
