City walk: Advent in Salzburg
The pre-Christmas period is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful times in Salzburg. This city walk combines special highlights of Advent in Salzburg and takes you through both famous and lesser-known places in the city.
The route in detail
The walk begins in front of the cathedral. From there, it leads via the Christmas market at Cathedral Square and Residence Square along Kapitelplatz through the cemetery of St. Peter’s to the collegiate church. After visiting the church, which features two nativity scenes, you can relax in the “Christmas wonderland” at St. Peter Stiftskulinarium. The route then continues through the beautiful inner courtyard of St. Peter’s to the Franciscan church and on to Getreidegasse, where you can warm up with a traditional “Sporer punch.”
Next, the path follows the Salzach River and crosses the Müllner Steg, leading through the Mirabell Gardens to the Christmas market in front of Mirabell Palace. The route then proceeds into the tranquil Steingasse. After crossing the Mozartsteg, you will return to the old town on the left. At Mozart Square, it is worth visiting the Salzburg Christmas Museum, which is open almost all year round. After exploring the special Christmas exhibition at the Salzburger Heimatwerk, you can stroll along the romantically illuminated Oskar Kokoschka Trail to Hohensalzburg Fortress. The Advent market at Salzburg Fortress in the castle courtyard is the perfect ending to this tour through Advent in Salzburg.
