City walk: Advent in Salzburg
The runup to Christmas is indisputably one of the most beautiful times of year in Salzburg. This City Hike brings together special highlights of Advent in Salzburg, taking you to some of the less famous places in the city.
The route in detail
The starting point for this walk is the Christkindlmarkt located on Cathedral Square and Residenzplatz as well as Salzburg Cathedral itself. Crossing the Kapitelplatz, you will continue through St. Peter’s Cemetery to the Abbey Church. A visit to this church, with its two Nativity scenes, combines nicely with a look at “Christmas Wonder World” in the St. Peter Stiftskulinarium. Our route then leads via the Franciscan Church into Getreidegasse, where we can warm our cockles with a traditional “Sporer Punch”. Strolling alongside the Salzach and crossing the river via the Müllner Steg, we make our way through Mirabell Gardens to the Christmas Market in front of Mirabell Palace. Now continuing down Steingasse, two more highlights await us. We cross the Mozartsteg and reenter the heart of the historic district. On Mozart Square, a visit to the Salzburg Christmas Museum – open year-round – is always rewarding. After browsing through the special christmas exhibition of Nativity scenes at the Salzburger Heimatwerk, we will quietly amble along the romantically illuminated Oskar-Kokoschka-Weg up to Hohensalzburg Fortress. The Advent market in the castle courtyard (open Friday to Sunday) is the perfect conclusion to this delightful ramble through a Salzburg Advent.
