City Walk: UNESCO World Heritage Salzburg
In 1997, UNESCO declared the Historic Centre of the Town of Salzburg a World Heritage Site – thus honouring the history, architecture and culture of the Mozart Town. The walk through the Old Town and to the most significant buildings becomes a special experience with the tips from a cultural expert.
The route in detail
The starting point of the city walk is Salzburg Cathedral with the adjacent DomQuartier. The route continues to Mozartplatz, where the official plaque of the UNESCO award can be found. The next stops lead to the Nonnberg and on to Hohensalzburg Fortress, which you can either visit straight away or after the walk. The route then leads on to the Archabbey of St. Peter, along the Festival Halls and through the lanes, squares and passageways so typical of Salzburg to Mozart's birthplace. The walk continues across the Salzach to Linzer Gasse and St. Sebastian's cemetery. The Mirabell Gardens present an additional attraction – the World Heritage Centre will be opened there. Across the river back to the left side of the Old Town, we reach the Augustiner Bräu Mülln – a good place to stop for a drink. If you like, you can hike up the Mönchsberg along the old town walls and enjoy the magnificent view of the Old Town.
