City Walk: UNESCO World Heritage Salzburg
In 1997, UNESCO designated the Historic Center of Salzburg as a World Heritage Site, celebrating the rich history, stunning architecture, and vibrant culture of Mozart's city. A walk through the Old Town, exploring its iconic landmarks, becomes an even more unforgettable experience with unique insights shared along the way.
The route in detail
The city walk begins at the Salzburg Cathedral, which is connected to the DomQuartier. From there, the route leads to Mozartplatz, where you can find the official UNESCO plaque. Next, you’ll head up to Nonnberg and continue to the Hohensalzburg Fortress, which can be visited either during the walk or afterwards. The path then takes you to the Abbey of St. Peter, past the Festival Halls, and through Salzburg's characteristic alleys, squares, and passageways to Mozart's birthplace. Crossing the Salzach River, you’ll reach Linzer Gasse and St. Sebastian’s Cemetery. The journey continues through the Mirabell Gardens and back across the river to the left bank of the Old Town, where the Augustiner Bräu Mülln offers a perfect spot to unwind. For those who wish, a climb along the old city walls to the Mönchsberg provides breathtaking views over the Old Town.
