Funicular to the Fortress [FestungsBahn]
The FestungsBahn is Austria's oldest funicular still in operation. Since 1892, it has been transporting visitors to the Fortress Mountain.
Since 1892, the Fortress Railway has been taking visitors to Hohensalzburg Fortress, the most prominent landmark of the city, in both summer and winter. It runs at 10-minute intervals. The valley station is located in the heart of the old town (Festungsgasse 4). In just 54 seconds of travel time, a distance of 198.5 m is covered.
The last renovation of the Fortress Railway took place in 2011. Investments were made in two new vehicles and the renewal of the electrical equipment. The new cars are characterized by high comfort and impress with large panoramic windows that offer a sensational view of the beautiful old town.
