City Walk: Salzburg Beer Culture
With eleven breweries, Salzburg is Austria's beer capital. This can be experienced in beer gardens or trendy bars as well as on themed tours. Our beer route explains the most important historical stages of beer culture from the first brewery to the present day - and shows the best beer bars.
Explore Salzburg on the Beer Tour
The starting point is the oldest wheat beer brewery in Austria. The city walk continues with the Gablerbräu in Linzergasse and the nearby Münchnerhof, taking you all the way to the end of the 14th century. At the end of Getreidegasse is the birthplace of what is probably Salzburg's most famous brewery, the Stiegl Brewery. The Augustiner Bräu in Mülln is a Mecca for beer lovers - the shady garden with the famous chestnut trees and the clay jugs make this the ideal place for a break. The rest of the way leads over the Mönchsberg, turning the route into a real hike. Whether as a bonus at the end of the walk or as a little extra round in between, the Stiegl Brauwelt, where the treasures of the city of beer culture are brought to life.
The entire route covers 5,6 km, excluding the Stiegl Brauwelt. This section can also be explored on another day if needed. Additionally, under each point of the tour, there are “Learn More” sections providing information about excellent beer pubs in the nearby area.
