City Walk: Salzburg Beer Culture
With eleven breweries, Salzburg is Austria's beer capital. This can be experienced in shady beer gardens or trendy bars as well as on themed tours. Our beer tour explains the most important historical stages of beer culture from the first brewery to the present day – and shows the best beer pubs.
Explore Salzburg on the Beer Tour
This city walk begins with the Gablerbräu in Linzergasse and the neighbouring Münchnerhaus, almost at the end of the 14th century. Cross the Staatsbrücke into the Old Town and you'll soon wonder what a McDonald's could possibly have to do with Salzburg's beer culture. At the end of Getreidegasse is the birthplace of what is probably Salzburg's best-known brewery, the Stiegl brewery. The Augustiner Bräu in Mülln is like a Mecca for beer lovers – the shady beer garden with the famous chestnut trees and the earthenware mugs make this stop the ideal place for a refreshing break. The rest of the tour takes you over the Mönchsberg and actually turns into more of a hike. Stiegl Brauwelt is a must, either as a bonus at the end of the walk or a little extra round in the middle – where the treasures of the beer culture city can be experienced first-hand.
